 Setting Dictates Priorities

Teaching First

Most colleges and universities take pride in the quality of teaching they do, but for some it is actually the basis of tenure. If you are in one of these institutions then you will soon know of the services available to help you improve your teaching. Faculty Development Centers, often called Teaching Excellence Centers, provide many resources to help you improve your teaching and do training on how to use the latest technology supported on your campus. Take advantage of what these centers have to offer.

Research First

Universities and selective colleges often use research as the first criterion for tenure progress. If you are in such a department, you will have more preparation to do. You will have to meet teaching standards as well as strong publication criteria. These are difficult to quantify since they depend on the number of articles, conference papers, or book chapters, the number of coauthors, the quality of the press, etc. Making career decisions about your choices and how to manage your time are key factors in coaching.
